Sherrill Administration announces $28 million in FY26 Local Freight Impact Fund grants

(Trenton) – The Sherrill Administration today announced $28.0 million in FY26 Local Freight Impact Fund grants that help counties and municipalities promote the safe movement of large truck traffic.

“New Jersey is a global hub for commerce with seaports, airports, and rail yards that are critical to our regional and national economies. Governor Sherrill is committed to investing in this infrastructure to ensure a more reliable, modern, and safe transportation network,” NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain said. “These Local Freight Impact Fund grants allow counties and municipalities to make improvements to local roads and bridges that carry commercial truck traffic, supporting a strong state and regional economy for years to come.”

The Local Freight Impact Fund is a competitive program that was created as part of the Transportation Trust Fund reauthorization in October 2016. NJDOT received 48 grant applications for the FY26 Local Freight Impact Fund Program, of which 23 grants are being awarded. Those grants represent 11 counties and 23 municipalities. Of the 23 projects, there are 17 roadway preservation projects, three truck safety and mobility projects, one bridge preservation project, one pavement preservation project, and one new construction project. Click here for a full list of project awards.

The program helps New Jersey’s counties and municipalities fund projects that emphasize and enhance the safe movement of large truck traffic, renew aging structures that carry large truck traffic, promote economic development, and support new transportation opportunities. Under the program, projects that fall into six categories are eligible for funding: bridge preservation, new construction, pavement preservation, roadway preservation, truck safety and mobility, and pedestrian safety.

The grants are administered by the NJDOT Division of Local Aid and Economic Development. NJDOT staff evaluate projects using a variety of criteria including existing conditions, overall traffic volume, percentage of large truck traffic, crash frequency involving large trucks, and connectivity to freight nodes, among others.
