USDOT Steel Slag Initiative Stakeholder Workshop

May 13 @ 9:00 am - 3:30 pm

Join us for the 2026 USDOT Steel Slag Initiative Stakeholder Workshop, a full-day forum dedicated to evaluating viable construction applications for steel slag and identifying pathways to expand the market for this important industrial by-product.

Recent changes in domestic steel manufacturing have significantly increased the volume of electric arc furnace (EAF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slags produced in the United States. Despite this growth, steel slag remains largely underutilized and under-investigated. Its expanded use represents a substantial opportunity to support domestic manufacturing, create new markets, and reduce reliance on foreign material imports.

This workshop will convene experts and stakeholders from federal and state transportation agencies, steel producers and slag processors, practicing engineers, and academia to assess the current state of practice, identify research and data gaps, and examine specification and policy needs. Together, participants will chart a path forward for increasing the practical and sustainable use of steel slag in construction.

A key outcome of the workshop will be the development of a structured Research Agenda to guide future research, innovation, and education efforts under the USDOT Steel Slag Initiative.
